Just practised some body parts at life drawing session on Wednesday. I did some other stuff to but no pics. I used different paper-not newsprint...and I liked using it a lot. I bought some sketchpads of 65 pound paper. I had some heavier paper but didn't like it. I haven't tried the new stuff yet..I hope it works okay. I will find out next Wednesday.

I worked this drawing up in my studio from the sketch I did at a life drawing session.
It is a study for a painting I want to do. The paper had some marks on it and I couldn't get the background smooth so I decided not to spend anymore time on it since it was just supposed to be a quick study. Charcoal on paper, 14" x 19" cropped a bit.

Had my very first life drawing session last night. Fun!!! But hard! Lots of discipline. The model did 6-20 minute poses. I have 2 that are barely passable. The people are great and it was a lot of fun. I will go back!

Or should I say Stevensen's Paint Slicks! They are too much fun! I tried some out on my sunset-just to play a bit and try them out! They are to die for! I can't say enough about them. I bought Titanium White, mineral violet, cad yellow and a pearlescent one as well as a blending stick. They are not cheap...but they are pure pigment and you don't need much. Ask me how I know this!!! Way too much paint on my painting but it was fun. Did I mention they are fun???? Here is what I did today on my Alaska Sunset.

Christmas Gift Baskets

I made some gift baskets this week. Had to make everything to put in them too..so this is my excuse for not painting. Craft fair at the art gallery for Christmas and they need the stuff in 2 days from now. My studio is a mess..but the natural beauty products are ready. Soon I can paint again...hooray!!!

Fixing this Painting

I finished a painting...and had a buyer for it...they were only waiting for me to varnish it. So I did. The varnish wouldn't dry!!! It was thick and sticky and gathered dust, cat hair etc. I took it all off...or so I thought. It remained sticky... for 4 months. Finally I was merciless and removed every trace of varnish from the painting. Some paint came with it...so now I have to repaint the top layer. The good news is...the people still want it when I get it finished. I had previously sold them a more expensive painting in lieu of this one..for the same price as this one. Anyway...here it is so far. Just have to finish highlighting the water, the hills and put in some weeds along the front.

I did some more today. I succommed to the advice to enhance the contrast of my painting to make t appear more realistic. I simply darkened the tree and the cliff. And I am glad I did. People seem to like it both ways...some like it one way..and others like it the other way. Personally..I am trying for realism...so here we go...

Woohoo! She loved it and bought it on the spot. I told her I had been thinking of putting some water drops on the leaves and petals...just a few. She wants them so I will wait for the painting to dry and then paint them. She will leave the painting with me until it is done. This is good because I am not ready to let it go yet anyway. Post Partum depression as someone told me....not ready to give up my baby yet. LOL. Anyway...here is an autumn painting I did a few years ago..since it is that time of year..and I don't have any new paintings to post.

No painting today....nor will there be for a while. I am organizing and cleaning...company is coming. Nothing to stifle your creative urges like the trepidation of company. Joking...I am looking forward to their coming. The postings on here during the next 3 weeks will be very few since I will be going away twice and having two sets of company. I am quite looking forward to it all...although I will miss painting and doing the markets. The cats will be upset of course..they don't do well with change in their routine. I bought a French Easel a few days ago so I will enjoy Plein aire painting better. Hard to enjoy plein aire painting when I am tiring myself out hauling things around. And this is British Columbia...so there are hills everywhere to climb carry things up and down. I am tired before I even start painting. Now I can set up easily and concentrate on the painting. The photo is tilted...but this is the new easel.

Something I haven't done for years is Plein aire paint. In fact I have only plein aire painted once....with the same friend I painted with again today. It was fun but I am not set up for outdoors painting so there was stuff to haul. But we did it and got set up and painted...so much fun. Nice friend too! Here is the painting. Not done but it was a good start. I will touch it up in the studio. 8" x 10" oil on gessoed hardboard.

Took the Day Off and Painted a Pastel

I have been working hard with my natural beauty products. The market sales are going well and, as a result, I have been making more products. Made 2 batches of soap yesterday and meant to make a batch of moisturizing cream today. However....I was minding my own business when the VPON people abducted me to join their pastel lesson. Sure I said...I like pastels but of course I am too busy..don't have time. So I watched. I had no intentions at all of painting but after 10 minutes of watching I grabbed a paper, sketched out the ref photo, and began to paint. Piper is fantastic, I was inspired to death. She showed us how to mount the paper onto the board and transfer the drawing to the pastel paper. She did the painting along with us but there was so much freedom. We weren't constrained to using any specific colours but she did make some suggestions and she guided a few of us along the way if necessary.The entire group was so inspirational and funny. I had a great afternoon, learned a lot and finished a painting. Did I tell you I was a die hard oil pinter? This is only my 4th pastel attempt. Thanks to the VPON people for a great afternoon and thanks Piper for the great lesson.

Another update. Just worked on the one rose middle left because it was causing me grief. The colour is wrong but the shape is much better...or at least..if it isn't better..at least I am happier with it. This is like painting a group portrait with 9 people in it. I didn't think painting roses would be this much work. No where near finished. I still have to get all the roses to a lovely vanilla colour....while maintaining the integrity of the rose....On a less whiney note, I am quite pleased that I am painting more..and at different hours. I don't usually paint at night....10:00 PM-11:PM is night for me...
This morning, I hung 3 paintings in the Art Walk. Have to put one more in tomorrow...when I retrieve it from the art gallery where it is currently hanging. Yup..that means it didn't sell in the gallery.

Roses Update...

Well I have been doing Farmers Markets in the park. It is quite fun. I bought a tent and took some tables and my stuff and off I went! The weather has been unbearable though. 36 C. It is supposed to cool off soon though, yayyyyy! My artist friends inspired me today and I painted. If it wasn't for them...I probably wouldn't have. But I am so glad that I did....I had a fullfilling paint session. The end is in site for the roses. Have to nail the colour now and work on the background. I might make few changes to the roses on the extreme right. The painting seems unbalanced to me. I will wait until I lay in the background though and work on the leaves some more. I just threw some green in there for now. Here it is.

I am having fun doing them...but roses are hard! Especially since I don't have a correct reference photo. I am having to mix and match roses. But then I guess most things are hard until you understand them. In Natural Beauty Products Mode.....

....and need to paint real soon! Maybe today. I have been working on developing my liquid soap. Normally liquid soap is harsher than regular soap because more lye is needed to make the soap clear. I am not into harsh soap and prefer the soap to be emolliating and gentle on the skin. The downside of this is my soap is not clear and over time the emollients tend to separate and float to the top. This can be resolved by inverting the bottle from time to time but is rather annoying. I am trying to find a way to keep the emollients mixed in without adding more lye or adding chemical emulsifiers...which I refuse to do Sigh! Now you know my problems. :) I ordered a sun shelter because I am going to become part of the phenomena known as the Farmer's Market. There is one in my little town on Tuesday mornings so I can hang out and sell my Natural Beauty Products there. I may also bring some paintings and note cards and was even thinking of bringing my easel and working on my chacoal portrait of my sister. I am really needing to paint so today will most likely be the day. Here is a pic of a couple of my new liquid soap labels.

I painted some more on my Roses. since I know nothing of painting Roses, it is all trial and error. I am beginning to like the layout. still have to figure out 2 of the roses and then I can start adding the right colour and try to make them alive. That is the trick isn't it....? I dropped one of my paintings (Eastern Sky)off at the art gallery for the Centennial Show. Our town is 100 years old this year and I submitted 2 paintings to be juried and one was accepted. I had a good paint session today. I needed one.

Went for a walk and brought along my camera. Of course..that was the whole reason I went for a walk..to take photos. Playing around with my new lense. The lense is great but I have to learn how to use it. It isn't great for landscapes but I am really liking it. This photo seems to be a favourite. Not my favourite but most people really liked it.

I bought a new lense for my SLR yesterday. Wow! I love it. What an improvement over the kit lense that came with the camera. I couldn't get a decent photo..my point and shoot produced better photos than my SLR with the kit lense. Then I found out that cheap lenses don't let in enough ligh, among other things. I scraped together enough money to buy a 70-200mm f/4L USM. What a difference. Here is a quick photo for now; I took this at the camera shop to try the lense out. No camera set up or anything. Better photos to follow.

Well I didn't like the layout of the roses so I changed it. Of course! I am much happier with this one. I was up until 1:00 AM redrawing the roses and figuring and throwing some paint. Started in on it again this morning and this is where I got to before I needed a break. Hope this one turns out! I am really enjoying doing this..so far. Of course I usually am sick of my painting before I am done. Not sick of it yet though.

Went for a walk today took some photos; it was good to get out. Painted some more today both before and after my walk. I am beginning to define the roses a bit. Never painted roses before so it will take a while to get them right. I am beginning to understand how they unfold. Now I just have to figure out how to paint them. I can see I need to get a lot more delicate. Not sure if I like the positiong but I will change as I go. If nothing else this is fun. Flowers are happy things to paint.

I resketched my roses commission because I woke up realizing...yes I had a dream about it....that the painting would be too small on a 16" x 20" canvas. After conferring with the lady...commissioner?......I pulled out an 18" x 24" canvas and resketched it. Having done it once already I was less than enthusiastic so it it was a lot looser. This is good! I fixed the charcoal with fixative..waited a bit and then layed on the underpainting washes. Since the background will be a dark green, almost black in places, I layed in a purple wash. This is a direct influence from an artist friend whose work I admire. Having laid down the background wash...I washed the roses with orange. The roses will be champage/white so I thought this would work. I told the lady that I would send her wip photos...but I think I will wait with this one cause she will no doubt have a heart attack. LOL.

....just been not in the mood to post anything. Antisocial would be the right word. So antisocial I am not posting to a blog that no one even knows is here. I had a varnishing disaster. I sold a painting to someone six months ago but they wanted to wait until it was varnished to bring it home. So far so good...I varnished it last week and the thing wouldn't dry. I do not know what happened. I took all the varnish off 4 days later and am waiting for the tackiness to go away. Still tacky 7 days later. She wants to see how the painting will turn out...if it does not go well..she wants a different one that I painted instead. Nice lady. I however am mortified that such a horrible thing could happen to my painting. Anyway...all is well. I sold another painting to another lady and have a commission for a new one from same lady. She also bought the Golden Sunset I posted earlier. You have to scroll down if you want to refresh yourself...if indeed anyone is here.......or is it archived by now? It is nice to have someone validating my foray into the artistic realm by buying my work. The new commission is an oil painting of roses for her wall. We shall see what transpires. Not sure I will varnish anymore...I am posting the painting that she just bought.

Worked all day getting my natural beauty products ready, packaged, labled and took photos of my paintings , transferred them to CD and submitted them to the art gallery for jurying for the summer show. Still have to make some products and have more packaging and labelling to do and print off brochures. I had some done but someone took a bunch to distribute. Nice lady! Here is the other painting that I submitted for jurying for the summer show. I finished it last year but never showed it. Good to have an emergency back-up painting! :)

Finished the Painting with Two Days to Spare!

Whew! finished this one and it has to be submitted for the summer show by Friday, April 28. I wanted to paint two new paintings but time ran out so I will submitt a painting I had done previously but have never shown. Now I can concentrate on my natural beauty products. It turns out that I will be in a Trade Fair on Sat. April 29 and doing an instore demo of my products on Saturday May 6. No painting until all this is done. I have to make up the products. My brochures are designed and some are printed off. My business cards are don...one for my art and one for my natural beauty products. Might as well bring my art business cards there too. :) Anyway here is the finished painting (I think!) :)

Well I had a meeting with the lady about demo-ing my natural beauty products in her store early in May and it knocked me out of painting mode and into natural beauty products mode. I was ready anyway..sick of painting! :( LOL. She also wants me to go into a trade show at the end of this month. Not sure if I will do that one but I will do the demo in May. Thinking about the other one. So I have been starting to get ready, making what I can now. I don't want to start making things too early because I like the products to be fresh. I am straining beeswax and making milk baths and Spa Detox soaks. Had a good day. I didn't paint today but I have a wip from a few days ago that I started. Have to finish this by the end of the month too! (Busy month!)

Okay so I told the lady with the wonderful store I would do the demo in her store. Hope all goes well. We are meeting later this week to discuss things. She seems to be really nice. I worked on one of my paintings and it is almost done. Have to finish the water and a few touchups on the sky! Then have to finish the other one!

Well I HAD my two paintings done for the summer show at the art gallery but somebody bought them! So now I am panicing and having to paint replacements. I started two of them today. Also, a lady wants me to demonstrate my Natural Beauty Products in her store. It is an exclusive store, meaning if you sell your products in her store, you can't sell them anywhere else in this town. I don't mind putting them in her store but I don't want to do the demonstration. I am shy until I know people..so it will be hard. I may change my mind. If so I have to do it in April and paint my paintings at the same time. Can I do it? Should I do it? We shall see what transpires. Anyway here are the 2 WIP's. 12" x 24" 1 1/2" deep gallery wrap canvas. (First time I painted on this kind of canvas too! Lots of things going on here!)

Well at least I am painting..creative or not! :) I am working on a portrait that is taking me forever. It wouldn't take so long, except it is scaring me so I put it aside. I think I have overcome the fear for now. This is just a wip, the first opaque layer has been painted. I still have many layers to go.

My hard drive was making weird noises and freezing up and cutting out...like it was about to crash so I had to put a new one in. It went okay. I have been working on my Natural Beauty Products business...had some orders to fill and did some R & D. That is done...except for a bit of labelling. I am taking a day off. Tired! Anyway..still no art. Here is a photo I took of the Kettle Valley Steam Train last summer when we went for a ride on it. It is an authentic steam train that runs for several km behind Summerland, BC, Canada. Gorgeous views from the train. A bit of the old west.

Had to do a bunch of errands etc etc. And the next few days don't look good either. Sigh! I changed the layout of my blog a bit. Thanks for the info Morgana! I guess I could publish a Valentine's Day photo or something..but I don't have anything ready. Here is a cake that I made in a long time ago in a different life. Close enough? Highlighting

While I am waiting for my other painting to dry, I thought I would try to "fix" this one. It was looking flat. I added some highlights today. Now I will let it sit a while and then decide if I have to "fix" this layer. The picture isn't the greatest...but it sort of gives you the idea. 24" x 36" oil on canvas

WIP Update and Whining!

Here is my today's effort. Yesterday was just a rough underpainting. Today I put some real paint on. It is looking dark and a little green. It seems my subsequent layers exist only to fix the previous layer. I will wait until it dries and glaze it. Here comes the whine: I am still sick-sinus thingy and I am too stubborn to get antibiotics. I am drinking foul herbal remedies (not so foul..tastes quite good!)

Hi. First post here. I wanted somewhere to show my art as I create it, step by step. I did this today:
12" x 24" oils on canvas
It is the first layer. I need to get some work done for the summer show.
